Understanding, Assessing, Treating and Managing Tongue, Voice & Swallowing*
The follow-up to the first in the From the Neck Up course series, in this two day course, you will learn advanced manual therapy techniques and approaches for the treatment and management for symptoms and dysfunctions related to the tongue, voice & swallowing.
Maximum of 10 participants per class.
*pre-requisite: completion of Understanding, Assessing, Treating and Managing TMD/TMJD

Participants will receive:
- Evidence-informed, client-centered learning—rooted in both anatomy and real-world functional rehabilitation.
- Hands-on instruction, including guidance on landmarking, pressure modulation, ergonomics, and live intra-oral palpation demonstrations.
- Interactive learning environment, with opportunities to engage and exchange insights with peers and instructors.
- Development of therapeutic analytical skills, tailored specifically to tongue, voice, and swallowing dysfunctions.
- Advanced manual therapy approaches of the anterior neck, laryngeal area, floor of mouth and tongue.
- Complimentary post-course group follow-up via Zoom—for reviewing material, discussing questions, and ensuring integration of learning.
UNDERSTAND
- The interplay of tongue, laryngeal, and cervical musculature in swallowing, phonation, and articulation.
- How dysfunctions—stemming from muscular tension, surgery, neurogenic disruption, or compensatory patterns—can impact function and quality of life.
LEARN
- Core anatomy and biomechanics of the tongue, voice apparatus, and swallow mechanisms.
- Assessment protocols, including evaluation of the tongue, anterior neck and laryngeal area
- Intervention strategies such as intra-oral soft tissue release, laryngeal tension reduction, and advanced neck techniques.
ACQUIRE
- The ability to understand common presentations: e.g., tongue mobility restrictions, dysphonia, vocal strain, dysphagia, and globus sensation.
- Tools for constructing tailored treatment and self-care plans that maximize patient compliance and outcomes.
BECOME
- Skilled, confident, and precise in delivering treatment of the anterior neck, laryngeal area, floor of mouth and tongue.
