At From the Neck Up, we know that living with jaw pain, stiffness, or dysfunction can affect more than just chewing or talking — it can quietly impact areas of life we rarely discuss, like intimacy.
For many people with TMJ-related issues, activities that require prolonged mouth opening or tension in the jaw, tongue and neck can become uncomfortable or even painful. This can lead to frustration, avoidance, or feelings of shame that may ripple into emotional closeness and confidence with a partner.
We want you to know: You are not alone, and there is no shame in talking about it. TMJ dysfunction can affect daily activities, and intimacy is one of them. Addressing these concerns is part of caring for your overall well-being — both physical and emotional.
💬 Normalizing the Conversation
YMany patients feel hesitant to bring this up, but at From the Neck Up, our approach is always grounded in professionalism, empathy, and support.
If improving comfort and confidence during intimate activities is one of your goals, we’re here to help. We focus on the muscles and movement patterns involved in jaw and neck function — helping you regain ease, flexibility, and self-assurance.
💆♀️ Helpful Home Techniques
If you’re experiencing tension or discomfort, these gentle techniques can help reduce strain and improve muscle mobility:
Masseter Stretch Self-Massage – Eases tension in the main chewing muscle and encourages relaxation.
Temporalis Stretch & Self-Massage – Releases the temple muscles and supports better mouth opening.
Tip: Try these before bed or after a stressful day to calm the jaw and neck.
You can find these self-care exercises below.
