Why We Look at the Whole Person —The Biopsychosocial Approach to Neck, Jaw & Head Pain

You are more than muscles and joints
t From the Neck Up Clinic, one of the most important principles guiding our care is the biopsychosocial model of pain. This means that when you come to see us for jaw pain, headaches, neck tension, swallowing issues, voice strain, ear symptoms, or facial pain, we are not just looking at tissues — we are looking at you as a whole person.
Pain is never only physical. It is influenced by the body, the nervous system, emotions, stress, past experiences, sleep, workload, and even how safe and supported we feel.
One of our favourite quotes captures this idea perfectly:
“We don’t have a nervous system — we are a nervous system.”
This reminds us that every part of you is connected, and healing happens best when we respect that connection.
😃 What is the biopsychosocial model of pain?
Modern pain science shows that pain is shaped by three interacting factors:
Biological
Muscles, joints, nerves, inflammation, injury, posture, breathing, and movement patterns.
Psychological
Stress, anxiety, attention, past pain experiences, fear of movement, and emotional load.
Social
Work demands, family responsibilities, sleep, lifestyle, support systems, and daily pressures.
Research over the past several decades has shown that this model explains pain more accurately than a purely structural approach, especially for persistent conditions such as:
TMJ / TMD / jaw pain
Headaches and migraines
Neck and upper back tension
Facial pain
Voice, swallowing, and throat tension
Ear symptoms and tinnitus
Chronic muscle pain
Nerve sensitivity or burning sensations
These conditions often involve the nervous system becoming more protective and more sensitive, not just injured tissue.
🤔 Why this matters for treatment
If pain is influenced by the whole system, then treatment must also look at the whole system.
At our clinic, this means we may consider:
Muscle and joint function
Nervous system sensitivity
Stress and load on the system
Sleep and recovery
Movement habits
Work and daily life demands
Past injuries or medical history
How safe and comfortable your body feels
This approach allows us to tailor treatment to the person, not just the diagnosis.
👐 Connection is part of treatment
When the nervous system feels safe, supported, and understood, it becomes less protective. And when the nervous system becomes less protective, pain often becomes easier to change.
This is why building rapport, listening carefully, and creating a calm, respectful environment are not extras — they are part of the therapy.
Hands-on treatment works best when it happens in a context of trust.
That is why we take the time to understand your story.
Because you matter.
Not just your symptoms.
🙎♀️ Evidence-informed care, whole-person focus
The biopsychosocial model is widely supported in modern pain science and is recommended in current guidelines for managing persistent musculoskeletal and nerve-related pain.
It helps explain why two people with the same injury can feel very different levels of pain — and why healing is not always linear.
By working with the body, the nervous system, and the person together, we can often create more lasting and meaningful change.
